FED: Latham gains ground in key marginal seats: Newspoll

Opposition Leader MARK LATHAM is pegging back Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD'S lead in
the key marginal electorates that will decide the next election.

However, the Newspoll, published in The Australian newspaper today, shows that Mr LATHAM
has failed to lift Labor's primary vote in the same seats.

The Australian says it's now clear that the recent rise in the ALP's national vote
is coming more strongly from safe Labor seats and is not shifting voters in the election-winning
seats.

But it says the new opposition leader has improved his personal standing, compared
with his predecessor SIMON CREAN, in every category of seat -- marginal, safe Labor and
safe Coalition.
