QLD: Firefighters to teach PNG trainees

BRISBANE, Feb 2 AAP - Queensland firefighters will train Papua New Guinea firemen in
the latest fire fighting techniques and rescue procedures, state Emergency Services Minister
Merri Rose said today.

She said under an historic agreement between the Queensland Fire and Rescue Authority
(QFRA) and Ok Tedi Mining seven firefighters would travel to PNG to conduct a series of
training programs.

Ok Tedi is one of the world's largest copper mines and is the biggest contributor to PNG's
Gross Domestic Product.

Ms Rose said the mining operation needed accredited fire management training in the areas
of confined space, road accidents, hazardous material, the use of breathing equipment and
basic fire team training.

QFRA had accredited commercial training packages in each of these fields and these would be
sent to fire station personnel at Tabubil, Ok Tedi's nearest township.
