Qld: Different approach needed to prevent fruit fly scourge

A leading researcher says the fruit industry shouldn't have to bear the cost of fruit
fly control on its own.

Professor RICHARD DREW says international tourism and a lack of funding have done more
to spread fruit flies than the bulk movement of fresh produce.

Prof DREW, from the fruit fly research group at Queensland's Griffith University, says
industry should share the cost of control, and says governments must provide sufficient
funding.

Prof DREW has called on federal and state governments to review their policies on fruit
fly management.
